John leads the International tax and transfer pricing group of BANNING together with Jan-Gerben Smallenbroek. John’s practice focuses on international tax planning of
multinational corporations. He advises Dutch and foreign multinationals on direct taxes, focusing on reorganizations, mergers, and takeovers, tax accounting and board room counseling. In addition, John provides second opinions for in-house tax practitioners and other parties. Besides a Dutch client base consisting of multinationals and listed companies, John has a strong network of U.S. clients.
Before joining BANNING, John gained experience for more than 25 years working with some international law firms and in particular with one of the Big Four accounting/tax firms. In such capacity he has been a member of the Tax Board and responsible for the strategic tax relations of the firm in Europe. As a reaction to the changed environment on taxation, where companies have become more aware of tax as part of their financial performance, John has provided assistance to a number of the top-quoted companies in the Netherlands and the U.S. dealing with fulfilling their tax accounting documentation requirements and developing a tax control framework.
John started his career in taxation in 1988 and graduated in tax economics at the University of Rotterdam.
